My work focuses on rituals because that’s where the transmission of culture lies—in spirituality and its dead branch, religion, where the colonial mind has been perpetuated.
This second painting ceremony by Samuel interrogates elements of Christianity and traditional divinity through an iconographic mosaic that echoes pre-Columbian history and its anthropomorphic forms. These symbols of spirituality become the stage for a live music performance by his brother Sergio, who composes a sonic ambience weaving together elements of prayer and environment, surrounding the work with a sacred aura.

“Não faz mal”—translated from Portuguese as “no problem” or more literally “no wrongdoing”—speaks directly to the Christian concept of original sin, reframing the crucifix within new context and symbolism that invites imperfection. This evening concert becomes an embracement of imperfection, a rewriting of imposed colonial narratives of monotheism that invites our shadows and plurality into sacred space
